Doing Hard Things Well

First quarter is over; can you believe it? The month of March literally marched through here like it had some place to be. Okay!

One of the difficult things I've challenged myself to work on is doing hard things well. Yes, even as a counselor. I believe doing hard things well consists of doing uncomfortable things despite how you feel. Additionally, I believe it consists of demonstrating respect for yourself and others in any situation, remaining patient, maintaining an attitude of gratitude, operating with integrity, curiosity, honesty, committing value-based actions, and communicating with love.

My friend, Shay says "lead with love, but tell people the truth." How do you honor this when you are tired, angry, or disappointed? How do you honor this when the circumstances of a situation change? Sit with that. My initial thoughts include character maturation and/or spiritual development.

I, too, can respond in ways that are not congruent with who I'm becoming. I jokingly remind others that I’m my parents’ child. Furthermore, my credentials come after my name for a reason; I'm human first!

During this first quarter I made a decision that was tough for me because it went against what I believed was the "right thing," moral obligation. I like to make decisions that I have peace with. Notice I didn't say comfortable. Sometimes the best things aren't comfortable but may bring about long-term peace. Also, the gratification of a decision is not always instant.

This prompted further thought about doing hard things well.

It dawned on me, although uncomfortable maybe this is God's way of preparing me, enhancing my capacity, developing my character, and/or encouraging a self-inventory.

My hope is that this blog inspires you to reflect on your ability to do hard things well.

Remember: "We may not choose the situations and the people in our lives, but we can choose how we react."

Feel free to share with a friend or anyone who may benefit.

Take time, talk soon!
